Live Ops: Battle Pass Diary Study

Live Ops Research – Monetisation Strategy

To support the evolving monetisation strategy of Power Rangers: Mighty Force, I led a 6–8 week diary study focused on the introduction of a new Battle Pass feature. Although the game had been live for over a year, this was our first implementation of a seasonal progression system. The aim was to understand long-term player engagement, perceived value, and overall satisfaction with the new feature across a full gameplay cycle.

I managed the research, including:

  • Recruited and onboarded 12 targeted playtesters

  • Designed the diary study framework based on research objectives

  • Facilitated ongoing participation across multiple time zones using email, Discord, and Google Forms

  • Conducted mixed-methods analysis, combining quantitative engagement data with qualitative reflections

  • Used triangulation to uncover the “why” behind emerging patterns

One of the key insights came from identifying a disconnect between player effort and reward satisfaction, which was not apparent through telemetry alone. Diary entries helped contextualise this frustration, revealing that some rewards felt underwhelming or poorly timed within the pass.

My final report informed the team of:

  • Specific balance issues across the reward tiers

  • Motivational barriers that impacted perceived value

  • Key opportunities for feature improvements in future seasons

This study provided a strong foundation for refining our Battle Pass approach and served as a model for future mixed-methods research on live features.
